source:       time:2021.04.23

editor's notes: for celebrating the 110th anniversary, tsinghua universityorganized "on the university" forum series as part of its anniversary celebrations from 12th to 16th april, 2021. these series included forums that explored tsinghua's contributions in the five themes: openness, innovation, philanthropy, sustainable development, and thoughts.

tsinghua university latin america center shared with our global partners the information of the forums and gave warm welcome to them for joining. after the forums, we received ashort article from mr. fernando reyes matta, former chilean ambassador to china, director of the center for latin american studies on china, andrés bello university, chile. we are very delighted to share with our friends here as below:

short article from mr. fernando reyes matta

it is very important that tsinghua university has placed sustainable development as a central theme in its cycle of five "on the university" series forum.

the idea that the mission of the university is to train talents and innovate by always creating more knowledge, but with a framework of culture and a commitment to humanity is very powerful. as professor feng yuan said, high quality training for any specialty requires training in culture and in the field of ideologies. that explains why tsinghua chose these 110 anniversary to publicize its report on sustainable development goals. there, in those 17 goals, are the greatest challenges that we face in the 21st century to give quality of life to humanity. from now on, he pointed out that at unab we would like to make this report known to our entire latin american network, along with a synthesis in spanish of its content.

two interventions seem to me to open up possibilities for new dialogues between tsinghua and our country: the contributions of dr. margaret chan, former director of who, by pointing out that health (or preserving life) is the basic human right and all countries should work together to support a public policy for this; advances towards renewable energy and carbon neutrality, said by professor he kebin, require cooperation from around the globe. chile and its energy programs can serve as a counterpart for specific projects in this field. i cannot fail to mention the interest that i was aroused by knowing that the tsinghua museum of arts has organized online exhibitions. it would be excellent tsinghua and the unab could organize a joint exhibition, with text and explanations for an audience from chile and other latin american countries.

amid the tensions created by the united states, the 2030 agenda and the sdgs constitute a solid platform for dialogue between china and latin american countries. this is how i promoted it for the ii celac china forum and that is how i see it as a framework for future relations between china and latin america, beyond the fractures currently being experienced in our region.
