the autumn 2023 work meeting of the tsinghua university-lac international technology transfer working group - uc innovation center was held at tsinghua university's li hua building on the afternoon of october 17, 2023.
the tsinghua university-lac international technology transfer working group is a collaboration between the office of technology transfer, tsinghua university, tsinghua university latin america center, and coway international techtrans co., ltd. its mission is to drive innovative collaboration in the transfer of tsinghua university's technology to latin american nations like chile, peru, and mexico. by effectively articulating the international technology transfer stories of a research-focused university from both theoretical and practical aspects, the working group seeks to deepen the partnership between china and latin america.
the participants from tsinghua university include prof. chen taotao, director of the latin america center, tan hongxin, deputy director of the international technology transfer center and general manager of coway international techtrans co., ltd., li taohong, deputy general manager of coway international techtrans co., ltd., peng ruimei, assistant director of the latin america center, dong yu, administrative director of the latin america center, and song qing, a doctoral student from tsinghua sem.
among the participants from uc chile were philippe werner-wildner, coordinator of international development, uc innovation center, and romina hidalgo, director of research and development, uc innovation center.
the focus of this meeting revolved around in-depth discussions on the main tasks and responsibilities of the working group for the year 2023:
1. driving the "tsinghua university-lac international technology transfer roadshow" project;
2. the tsinghua university-uc international technology transfer cooperation working group;
3. facilitating team members to engage in practical exchanges at uc chile, etc.
the meeting kicked off with a comprehensive review of the working group's endeavors throughout 2022 to promote the cooperation in international technology transfer between tsinghua university and latin american universities. with a shared vision for collaboration, both sides underscored the critical significance of enhancing communication and driving substantive cooperation.
centering around the "project selection" in the roadshow collaboration, li taohong gave detail on the 5 technology projects offered by the tsinghua university team to the chilean team, including biochemistry and energy storage technology. the participants actively discussed the potential and feasibility of transferring these technologies to chile through university platforms and serving social development. tan hongxin cited the case of coway getting involved in tsinghua university's international technology transfer practice. he mentioned the key points to consider in international technology transfer cooperation between tsinghua university and latin american universities, and emphasized the approach of progressing from "inter-university collaboration" to "professor-to-professor collaboration" as a key driver for cooperation.

philippe and romina presented the distinctive features and typical work cases of uc innovation center to the attendees. they mentioned that uc chile has high expectations for international technology transfer cooperation, believing it can facilitate bilateral "mutual learning and inspiration" of technologies. additionally, they highlighted the use of university platforms to drive bilateral resource integration and interaction, enabling technological innovation, academic entrepreneurship, and communication and collaboration with the industry. moreover, suggestions were provided concerning the scheduling and domain choices for the anticipated roadshow cooperation.

prof. chen taotao further affirmed the preliminary work of the working group in advancing the practice of the tsinghua university-uc international technology transfer cooperation. she believes that amidst the current international situation and the development needs of universities, it is necessary to seize opportunities and prioritize practical results. additionally, in light of the challenge of unclear mechanisms in the international technology transfer cooperation between tsinghua university and uc chile, she proposed the need to promptly improve the allocation of members within the wechat group and relevant working mechanisms, while also organizing formal meetings dedicated to the corresponding topics around deepening international technology transfer cooperation.
