professor chen taotao, director of tsinghua university latin america center, paid a visit to vale s.a. (vale), the largest producer and supplier of iron ore in the world, on the afternoon of december 18, 2023, local time in rio de janeiro. she held talks with joyce merces, external affairs officer at vale, to exchange views on the company's efforts in corporate social responsibility.
ms. merces stated that there is the vale foundation, a separate entity under vale entrusted with corporate social responsibility, with a primary focus on addressing community issues in mining areas, as well as the vale culture institute, which concentrates on cultural issues by promoting cultural exchange and communication through the provision of music and educational courses. she also highlighted the company's initiatives in china, including the establishment of hope elementary schools and collaborations with the china development research foundation (cdrf), such as organizing study trips to shanghai for outstanding students from impoverished regions.
prof. chen raved about vale's series of initiatives in corporate social responsibility and expressed a desire for further and more substantial communication in the future.
